Make living with chronic diseases better

Hi, My name is Youssef, I was diagnosed last year with an autoimmune disease called Lupus and a related disease called Sjogren's.

This is a chronic condition that makes the immune system attack the body's own tissues and organs. The immune system thinks that the body's own tissues are foreign and releases antibodies to attack them. This causes inflammation and damage to the organs and tissues and if not managed properly can cause organ failure and death. There's currently no cure, and the current treatment focuses on slowing down the immune system response with medications like steroids and immunosuppressants, and managing the symptoms and side effects of the meds.

It's an unpredictable disease, and the symptoms can range from mild to severe, depending on the type of lupus and Sjogren's, the severity of the disease, and how it's managed. The side effects of the meds are just as bad as the disease, nuking the immune system and making the patient more susceptible to infections. If not monitored properly, it can be a life-threatening situation. So you have to be proactive in managing your condition and follow up with your doctor regularly.

While going on this journey, I'm constantly learning new things about my condition and how to manage it.

I'm a software engineer, I love solving problems for fun—though not anymore, since this time it's about my life.

I have no medical background, but my superpower is that I can hack things. And especially since AI is accessible now more than ever, I decided to start this project as my hacking project. I see areas where AI can help me and others like me better manage their condition. AI supervision is the future of medicine. It's already here, but it's not being used as much as it could be.

With enough data, it can help with a lot of things like:

  • Detect what triggers a flare
  • Predict disease progression
  • Help each individual to have a personalized treatment plan
  • Monitor the effectiveness of the treatment
  • Early detection of complications and a lot more things

I built a tool called Asknysa.com. It's an AI assistant trained on a huge dataset of medical papers and articles to answer questions about Lupus and Sjogren's, and I use it almost daily to get answers to my questions. It's been a life saver. I have checkups with my doctor and almost always have the answers to my symptoms before my appointment, and I think it's a game changer.

My next goal is to build an app that will help me manage my condition better. It will have features like:

  • Tracking meds
  • Tracking symptoms
  • Storing my medical records and lab results
  • I'm sensitive to the sun, so the app will remind me when the UV index is high and help me plan my activities accordingly
  • Analyzing my data and providing insights using AI, with daily reports and continuous feedback on my condition
  • and many other features.

This is a long journey, and I'm excited to see where it goes. I'm going to share any updates on this blog. You can also follow me and contact me on X @yudax
